Bangkok Fight
Night VI
By Rachael McMillan
I am excited to
be at the Gwinnett Convention Center for Bangkok Fight Night
VI. Khunpon always puts on a great show. I am also happy to
have the chance to provide some play by play coverage of the
event. I must say, it is much different watching the fight
with this purpose. I often found myself into the fights and
watching as a fan, so I might have missed something or
jotted it down in such a hurry that I couldn’t read my notes
later.
It was a great night of fights.
Colleen Louima vs Carolina Cawthon (Ammy Muay Thai 125 lbs)
Round 1: Round 1 begins with Cawthon delivering a side
kick to the body of Louima. Then they clinch. They separate
and trade punches to the head before ending up back in the
clinch. After separating this time, Louima comes back with
some big punches to the head. Cawthon’s answer to these is a
high kick. Most of round 1 is spent in the clinch.
Round 2: Round 2 begins fast paced, with both fighters
rushing in and exchanging punches and knees. Again, they are
back in the clinch. Both fighters are landing knees to the
body. Cawthon seems to have the advantage with the punches.
She lands some big side kicks to the body of Louima that
help her keep her distance. Louima’s answer to this is back
to the clinch.
Round 3: Both fighters still come out
pressing the action. There is a big exchange of punches to
the head before ending up in the clinch. After separating,
Cawthon uses the push kick to keep her distance and then
follow up with a head kick. She continues to have success
with her kicks. The round ends with a flurry of punches from
both fighters.
Cawthon def Louima by unanimous
decision at the end of round 3.
Deace Goodman vs
Allan Roque (Ammy MMA 170 lbs)
Round 1: Both fighters
come out and exchange high kicks, and then end up in a
clinch. Goodman gets the take down and ends up in Roque’s
guard. Roque tries for an arm bar but Goodman gets out of it
and the fighters are back to their feet. Once again, Goodman
gets the take down and soon ends up in an arm bar attempt.
He escapes again, and the fighters are back to standing.
This time it’s Roque who lands some leg kicks and tries for
the take down. It is Goodman, however, who is successful
with the take down, and he ends the round delivering punches
to the body of Roque.
Round 2: A take down attempt
by Goodman lands Roque out of the ring. When they stand back
up, Goodman unleashes punches to his opponent’s body and
head, wearing him down, before taking it back to the ground.
Here he punishes Roque with more punches to the body;
however, Roque is able to sweep and take top position. When
he can’t pass Goodman’s guard, he lets the fight stand back
up. Goodman delivers brutal punches to the head and body of
Roque. The fight is stopped.
Goodman wins at 2:30 of
round number 2 due to refere stoppage.
Rachel
Seltzer vs Maty Peasantes (Ammy Muay Thai 126 lbs)
Round 1: Another fast paced female fight. Both fighters come
out with a flurry of punches and kicks. Once they settle, it
is Seltzer who stalks her opponent for most of the round and
is the one pressing the action.
Round 2: The fast
pace continues. The fighters end up in a clinch, where both
fighters land some good shots to the head, and Seltzer
delivers some knees to the body of her opponent. When they
separate Peasantes lands a nice head kick, but Seltzer is
unfazed by this and continues to stalk. She lands some leg
kicks, and once again the fighters exchange pretty even
shots to the head. Peasantes tries for another head kick,
and Seltzer answers with a big right hand that stumbles her
opponent. They are both using combinations and trading
punches pretty evenly. Seltzer is successfully using the
push kick to keep her distance.
Round 3: Seltzer
comes out swinging for the fences, but Peasantes answers
with punches of her own. They clinch briefly, and Seltzer
lands a couple of big knees. She continues to press the
action and stalk. Peasantes is still putting up a good fight
and throwing big punches with bad intentions, but it’s just
not enough to answer Seltzer’s pace. All three judges score
the fight 30-27 for Seltzer.
Seltzer def Peasantes by
unanimous decision at the end of round 3.
Tori
Barkley vs Corey Clark (Ammy MMA 260 lbs)
Round 1:
Both fighters come out working their jabs, establishing
their range. Barkley lands a big take down, and soon the
fight is over. Barkley wins by verbal tap out due to a
shoulder injury. When the official results were given after
the fight, a time wasn’t announced.
Tori Barkley def
Corey Clark by verbal tap out.
Moe Travis vs Allison
Stokes (Ammy Muay Thai 118 lbs)
Round 1: Travis looks
to get inside of the much greater reach of Stokes. They
clinch and Travis delivers some knees. Stokes is using her
push kick to keep that distance, but Travis is getting
inside and landing some good punches. They continue to trade
punches, with Travis clearly having the most power behind
hers. They clinch and are separated as the round ends.
Round 2: Travis is again the aggressor and lands solid
punches to the head of Stokes. Stokes is trying to use her
much longer legs to keep her distance, but Travis continues
to get inside. Nice superman (or is it superwoman) punch by
Travis. Stokes is trading punches with Travis, but Travis’s
power and accuracy of her striking is winning her the fight.
Round 3: Both fighters still come out full speed,
trading punches. Stokes tries to answer with a push kick,
but Travis catches it and comes in with a 1-2 and follows up
with a knee. Both fighters are throwing leg kicks in this
round. They continue to trade punches for the rest of the
round, and it is once again Travis with the upper hand in
the exchanges. At the end of the round, all judges score the
fight 30-27 for Travis.
Travis def Stokes by
unanimous decision at the end of round 3.
LJ Jones
vs Chris Luiz (Ammy MMA 200 lbs)
Round 1: Luiz
immediately goes in for the take down, but Jones sprawls and
fights off the attempt. Luiz continues to work for the take
down, until the ref finally separates the two, and the fight
is back to the feet. Jones clearly has the upper hand in the
stand up, and demonstrates this with several big overhand
rights. He then gets Luiz against the ropes where he rains
down a barrage of hard punches. Luiz has an iron chin and is
able to withstand this punishment until the end of the
round. Luiz ends the round with another take down attempt.
Round 2: Luiz begins the round with a leg kick
before trying for the take down. Again no success with this,
and the fighters are back up. Luiz tries the same strategy
again, but the fight remains on the feet. Jones is able to
land more of those big overhand rights. The pace slows a bit
as both fighters start to work their jabs. The round ends
with Luiz working for a take down.
Round 3: Jones
comes out really pushing the pace, landing leg kicks and
head kicks, followed by combos. Again, Luiz demonstrates
that iron jaw. During the exchange, Luiz lands on his back,
but Jones will not engage him here, and he is forced to
stand back up. Luiz clearly wants to take this fight to the
ground, but Jones, who is dominating the stand up, will not
allow it. Once again, Luiz lands on his back, but Jones lets
him up. The fight ends with unsuccessful take down attempt
by Luiz. All 3 judges score the fight 30-27.
Jones
def Luiz by unanimous decision at the end of round 3.
Steve Hall vs Kevin Brooks (Pro Muay Thai 200 lbs)
Round 1: Hall starts the round with a head kick. The
fighters exchange punches and end up in the clinch, where
Hall throws some good knees. They separate, and Hall is
getting the better of the exchanges. Brooks then answers
with some elbows and knees of his own. Hall comes back and
lands some big 1-2 combos. The round ends with both fighters
trading punches.
Round 2: Round begins with Hall
throwing some leg kicks and then a high kick that causes him
to slip. Both fighters continue to exchange punches, the
biggest damage coming from a big left from Hall that really
rocks Brooks. Brooks then answers this with a barrage of
punches and elbows of his own. Both fighters are tired at
the end of the round.
Round 3: The fighters begin
the round by exchanging leg kicks and punches. Hall lands
jabs that are hurting his opponent. The fighters continue to
clinch and separate. Hall lands a big head kick. The round
ends with the fighters trading punches, with the most damage
coming from the jab of Hall.
Round 4: Both fighters
come out and exchange punches. Brooks lands some hard knees.
We have a brief break in action because of a low kick by
Hall. The action resumes with both fighters working their
jabs, and Brooks landing some good combos. The round ends
with both fighters throwing a flurry of punches. The judges
score the fight 40-36, 39-37, 39-37 in favor of Steve Hall.
Hall def Brooks by unanimous decision at the end of
round 4.
Chike Lindsay vs Adam Brady (Pro MMA 155
lbs)
Round 1: Lindsay starts the round with a brutal
leg kick, followed by a second leg kick that lands Brady on
the ground. Lindsay continues to abuse his downed opponent
with the leg kicks, and the fight is over at 31 seconds of
round number 1.
Lindsay def Brady by TKO.
Anthony Nieves vs Allex Berrios (Pro Muay Thai 170 lbs)
Round 1: Berrios comes out with a hard leg kick. Nieves
catches the next kick and drops Berrios to the ground. Back
to the feet, the fighters clinch and trade knees. Berrios
lands another hard leg kick, followed by a solid 1-2 by
Nieves. Again, they are back in the clinch and trading
knees. The round ends with Berrios throwing kicks to the
body and head of Nieves.
Round 2: Nieves is the first
to land a leg kick in round 2. The fighters then clinch and
throw knees. It is Berrios who is doing the most damage. He
has Nieves hurt and eventually put him on the ground. He
survives the 8 count, only to be bombarded with more knees
that end the round.
Round 3: After exchanging some
punches, fighters end up in the clinch, with Berrios
creating some distance with a push kick. Then back to the
clinch and trading knees. It is still Berrios doing the most
damage. He drops Nieves with a kick. With his opponent back
to his feet, Berrios lands a leg kick and a head kick before
continuing to deliver those damaging knees. Nieves still has
fight in him and answers with a big right of his own, but it
was blocked.
Round 4: Nieves comes out aggressive in
the final round. The fighters clinch, but Berrios finds his
distance with a push kick. Nieves throws a spinning back
fist, but misses. Once again they find themselves in the
clinch with Berrios against the ropes, where he continues to
win the exchanges. Once separated, Nieves throws and misses
with another spinning back fist. The round ends with Berrios
unloading with punches. The judges scores are 40-36, 40-35,
40-36 in favor of Allex Berrios.
Berrios def Nieves
by unanimous decision at the end of round 4.
Donovan
Craig vs Ronnie Roger (Pro MMA 170 lbs)
Round 1: Both
fighters come out swinging for the fences, with Roger
seeming to have the upper hand in the exchanges. He knocks
Craig down with a body punch, but he gets right back up.
Roger then gets the take down and finds himself in the
half-guard of Craig, where he delivers some ground and
pound. Roger is able to get full mount and then takes
Craig’s back, delivering vicious ground and pound from all
positions. He continues to go from mount to taking the back
of Craig, punching all the time. Craig seems to weather the
storm and gets back to his feet as the round ends. The ref
calls an end to the fight.
Roger def Craig by TKO
(ref stoppage) at the end of round 1.
Ryan Peace vs
Robert Blake (Pro Muay Thai 158 lbs)
Round 1: Blake
opens the round with leg kicks. The powerful push kick of
Peace lands Blake against the ropes. The fighters exchange
leg kicks, but Peace catches a kick and drops Blake. Once
standing, Peace throws head kicks, and Blake answers with
punch combos. The powerful kicks of Peace are taking their
toll on Blake, who gets dropped by a leg kick from Peace.
Round 1 ends with Peace delivering a flurry of punches and
kicks.
Round 2: Round 2 begins with both fighters
exchanging leg kicks and punches. Peace scores a take down.
Back to his feet, Blake finds himself being punished by the
leg kicks of Peace. When he tries to answer with a kick of
his own, Peace catches the leg and sweeps him. Peace keeps
his distance with his jabs, so that he can continue to abuse
with his kicks. The powerful kicks of Peace are too much for
Blake. Peace wins by TKO.
Peace def Blake by TKO at
2:01 of round 2.
Eddie Walker vs Dymond Jones (Pro
Muay Thai title fight 185 lbs)
Round 1: Both fighters
come out pressing the action, throwing powerful combinations
of punches and kicks. Early advantage seems to go to Walker.
He catches the kick of Jones and sweeps him. He then drops
him with a knee. The action goes back and forth, with both
fighters exchanging punches and kicks. Walker gets a knock
down at the end of the round, but Jones survives the
standing 8 count to end the round.
Round 2: Walker
comes out with leg kicks. Both keep throwing jabs to judge
their distance. Walker is throwing more combinations. Jones
changes the pace of the fight and backs Walker against the
ropes. Here is unleashed a barrage of punches, bringing
Walker to the ground. He survives the 8 count, but takes
punishing kicks for the rest of the round.
Round 3:
Both fighters are tired, and the pace has slowed. They both
continue to throw punishing knees and kicks. Jones gets a
knock down near the end of the round, but Walker survives
the 8 count. The crowd is on their feet.
Round 4:
The crowd is on their feet, although each fighter can barely
stand at this point. They do, however, continue to find the
energy to put on quite a show. Walker backs Jones against
the ropes and delivers combos. Jones gets the clinch and
works some knees. The fans are loving it! Everyone knows
it’s a close fight, and the judges scores confirm it. 37-37
draw. Neither fighter leaves with the belt.
Walker vs
Jones: draw at the end of round 4
Warren Thompson vs
Brian McGinnis (Pro MMA 205 lbs)
Round 1: Thompson
comes out throwing leg kicks as well kicks to the body and
head, while McGinnis is swinging for the fences and knocks
Thompson down. He gets right back up, and the exchanges are
pretty even. McGinnis is throwing a big overhand rights with
some deadly intentions. Thompson answers with a push kick
that knocks down McGinnis, but he’s right back to his feet.
McGinnis then takes Thompson down into side control, but
Thompson works to guard and is able to sink in a deep
triangle. McGinnis might have been saved by the bell.
Round 2: McGinnis is trying to land punches, but the
push kick of Thompson is keeping him away. Thompson is
working for the takedown and lands in half-guard. He quickly
works to mount and then takes the back of McGinnis, sinking
in a rear naked choke.
Thompson def McGinnis by rear
naked choke at 1:31 of round 2.
